Losartan Info

What Is Losartan?

Losartan belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). It works by relaxing blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard. Losartan is the active ingredient found in several products available in Hong Kong, such as Cozaar, the generic Losartan tablets, and the combination drug Hyzaar.

Medications That Contain Losartan

In Hong Kong you will commonly see Losartan marketed under three names:

  • Cozaar - the brand-name tablet, usually supplied in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg strengths.
  • Losartan - generic tablets that match the same strengths as Cozaar and are often prescribed for the same purposes.
  • Hyzaar - a fixed-dose combination that pairs Losartan with a thiazide-type diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide). It is available in tablets that contain 12.5 mg Losartan + 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide or 50 mg Losartan + 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide.

These medicines come as oral tablets that are swallowed whole with water. The generic version is widely stocked in local pharmacies, while Hyzaar is used when a doctor wants to treat high blood pressure with two agents in one pill.

What Does Losartan Treat?

Losartan is approved in Hong Kong for several common cardiovascular conditions:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension). By widening the blood vessels, Losartan helps lower the pressure that the heart has to overcome.
  • Heart failure. It can be added to other heart-failure medicines to improve symptoms and reduce hospital visits.
  • Kidney disease linked to diabetes. Losartan slows the progression of kidney damage in patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • Stroke risk reduction (when combined with other antihypertensive drugs). Lowering blood pressure reduces the chance of a future stroke.

These uses are based on the drug’s ability to block the effect of a hormone called angiotensin II, which normally narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure.

How Losartan Works

Losartan blocks the receptors that angiotensin II binds to. When those receptors are blocked, the hormone cannot cause the muscles around the arteries to tighten. The resulting relaxation of the vessels makes it easier for blood to flow, which in turn lowers blood pressure. Most people feel the effect within a few days, although the full benefit may take a few weeks to become steady.

Safety Information

Common Side Effects

  • Mild dizziness, especially when standing up quickly.
  • Light-headedness or a sensation of warmth.
  • Small amounts of fluid loss that can cause a slightly dry mouth.

These reactions are usually short-lived and tend to improve as the body adjusts to the medicine.

Serious Reactions

  • Severe allergic responses such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, which may make breathing difficult.
  • Sudden and persistent stomach pain, vomiting blood, or dark stools - signs of possible internal bleeding.

If any of these occur, seek emergency medical help right away.

Who Should Be Cautious

  • Pregnant women should avoid Losartan because it can affect the developing baby.
  • People with severe liver problems or with a history of kidney failure need close monitoring.
  • Anyone who has previously reacted badly to other ARBs should discuss alternatives with a pharmacist or doctor.

Interaction Awareness

  • Other blood-pressure medicines - taking multiple agents may lower pressure too much.
  • Potassium-rich foods or supplements - Losartan can raise potassium levels, so excess potassium should be avoided.
  • Alcohol - excessive drinking can increase dizziness and low-blood-pressure effects.

For a full list of possible interactions, refer to the individual product information for Cozaar, generic Losartan, or Hyzaar.

What to Know Before Using

Store Losartan tablets at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep them out of reach of children. Treatment length varies: some people use the medicine for a few months to control a sudden rise in blood pressure, while others may need it long-term for chronic conditions. Always read the specific product leaflet and follow the directions printed on the label. For detailed usage, dosing, administration, refer to your specific medication's information.

Key Terms

Angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB): A type of drug that stops a hormone from tightening blood vessels. Hypertension: Persistently high blood pressure that can damage the heart and vessels. Diuretic: A medication that helps the body get rid of excess fluid through urine.
